In the Houston area, St. Augustine grass typically needs about 1 inch of water per week during summer, adjusted for rainfall, soil type, shade, and heat stress. TX GrassRX recommends deep, infrequent watering 2 to 3 mornings per week between 4am and 9am, and using a straight-sided can to measure your sprinkler output so your runtime actually delivers that inch.

Why Watering Matters
Watering is the single biggest factor affecting lawn health in Texas. Get it right, and everything else - fertilizer, weed control, pest management - works better.
Root Development
Deep watering pushes roots deeper into the soil, creating a stronger foundation.
Heat Tolerance
Deeper roots access moisture below the surface, surviving Texas summer extremes.
Disease Prevention
Proper timing and frequency prevent the fungal diseases that thrive in wet conditions.
Fertilizer Performance
Nutrients need water to move into the root zone - without it, treatments can't work.
Turf Density
Consistent moisture produces thick, lush grass that naturally crowds out weeds.
